How Does ScaleBlaster® Work?
The Smarter, Salt-Free Solution to Hard Water
Traditional water softeners rely on salt, chemicals, and constant maintenance. ScaleBlaster® offers a smarter, eco-friendly approach by altering how calcium behaves in water—preventing it from sticking to surfaces and forming limescale.
The Science Behind ScaleBlaster®
ScaleBlaster uses advanced signal frequency technology to target the root cause of hard water—calcium carbonate. A signal cable is wrapped externally around your incoming water line and connected to the ScaleBlaster control unit. This unit emits a unique range of low-frequency electromagnetic signals (from 1,000 to 20,000 Hz) that pass through the pipe and into the water.
These signals disrupt how calcium and magnesium ions bond, turning them into soft, microscopic crystals that stay suspended in the water instead of forming hard scale. Over time, existing scale breaks down and is flushed away, while new scale can’t form—without the use of salt, chemicals, or filters.
How It Works — Step-by-Step
- Signal Transmission – The ScaleBlaster control box sends modulating frequencies through a coil wrapped around your incoming pipe.
- Crystallization – These frequencies cause calcium and magnesium ions to collide and form stable, suspended crystals that no longer adhere to surfaces.
- Scale Prevention & Removal – Existing scale is gradually dissolved and flushed out. New limescale cannot form, keeping plumbing and appliances protected.

Residential Models
Choosing the proper model depends on the following factors:
SB-MAX
- Our “professional” grade model constructed of durable heavy-duty aluminum
- Works on Copper, PVC, CPVC & PEX pipe ~ What about galvanized pipe?
What about galvanized pipe?
All ScaleBlaster units can work on galvanized pipe, however the area where you wrap the signal cable cannot be a magnetic – like galvanized. A handyman or plumber will need to replace a 6-8” area of pipe this with either PVC or copper pipe. This is not a difficult job. The rest of the pipe downstream of this can remain galvanized and the unit will work fine. We are only concerned at where you wrap the coil at.
- Indoor/covered installations only ~ Why would I need to install outdoors?
Why would I need to install the unit outdoors?
The most desirable place to install the unit is on the main cold-water pipe entering the house after the shutoff valve and before the hot water tank and where the water splits off. You will need at least 12” of straight pipe to wrap the signal cable in this location.
- Homes up to 5,000 square feet ~ Over 5,000 square feet.
Over 5,000 square feet?
An additional unit should be added if the house has multiple water heaters or over 5,000 square feet. Contact us for more details.
- Water hardness levels up to 40 grains per gallon or 684 ppm~ Why this matters?
Calcium Hardness Level
It is important to know the calcium hardness level in order to determine the proper model to choose.
Municipal water – you can easily obtain the calcium hardness level by contacting your city or country water department or visiting their website. Standard calcium hardness test kits are available at all pool supply stores that will give you an accurate reading. You can have them perform this very quick and simple test for you.
Using our USA hard water map – you can use this map as a guideline to the calcium hardness level in your area.
Well water – is usually harder than municipal water and the water should be tested using the calcium hardness test kit or tested at a pool supply store. If you are unable to do that, we recommend purchasing the SB-Elite or the SB-MAX PRO.
- 10-year warranty
- UL, CUL listed

What is ScaleBlaster?
ScaleBlaster is an innovative, state-of-the art, electronic water conditioner that is installed on the incoming waterline entering the home. A signal cable is wrapped around the outside of the pipe and is connected to the enclosure. The unit produces a unique sound wave that alters the calcium molecules in the water, causing them to lose their “adhesive” properties. This removes existing limescale and keeps it from forming again. ScaleBlaster requires absolutely no maintenance, salt, chemicals nor any filters to replace.
Ready to Stop Limescale at the Source?
Protect your plumbing, save on energy bills, and enjoy clean, efficient water—without salt or chemicals. ScaleBlaster is trusted by thousands of homeowners worldwide.
